Storytime
As most of you know, I am a mother of two. At the time of this post, I work full time in Financial Planning and Analysis. I am also working on this Brains and Beauty School platform, as well as another platform; Nappy Hour Network. A little busy to say the least. If you are anything like me, you can feel so overwhelmed trying to excel at all the things (dinner and meal planning, extracurriculars, family vacations, and everything else!) How do we have time to focus on our careers and excelling in the workplace, too? According to a 2021 survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, 68% of working parents reported that they had taken time off work to care for a child or other family member in the past two years. In the same survey, 53% of parents reported that they had difficulty balancing work and family responsibilities.
3 Challenges Women Have in the Workplace
Challenge 1: Juggling work and childcare responsibilities can be tough.
Challenge 2: The so-called “mommy track” can limit career growth opportunities.
Challenge 3: Mom guilt is real and can make it hard to focus on work.
3 Tips to Overcome These Challenges
Tip 1: Get creative with your schedule! Maybe you can start work earlier in the morning and take a break midday to spend time with your little ones. Or, you could negotiate with your employer to work a flexible schedule that allows you to meet your childcare needs while still getting your work done.
Tip 2: Don’t let anyone underestimate you! Just because you’re a mom doesn’t mean you can’t achieve your career goals. Advocate for yourself, seek out challenging assignments, and make sure your boss knows you’re interested in advancing your career.
Tip 3: Cut yourself some slack! It’s normal to feel guilty when you’re away from your kids, but remember that you’re setting a great example for them by pursuing your career goals. And, when you’re at work, give it your all – you’ll feel more fulfilled and productive, which will benefit both you and your family.
Remember, being a working mom is tough, but you’re a superhero! With a little bit of creativity, confidence, and self-compassion, you can overcome any challenge that comes your way.
