Listen Up! How to Practice Active Listening Like a Boss
Do you find yourself constantly checking your phone or daydreaming during meetings and conversations? GUILTY!! We, as women, have no less than 1000 tabs open in our heads at one time. Whether we are mentally preparing for a meeting, getting ready for the day, helping with homework, or meal planning, we are ALWAYS multi-tasking.

Active Listening

It’s time to put down your devices and focus on the person in front of you. That’s right, we’re talking about the power of active listening.

Active listening is the art of giving someone your full attention during a conversation or meeting. It’s a skill that can improve your communication skills, build stronger relationships, and make you an all-around superstar in the workplace (and in life).

5 Easy Steps to become a Better Active Listener

So, grab a cup of coffee and let’s dive into how to practice active listening like a boss.

Stay in the loop for our next posts!

  1. Put down your devices

First things first, put down your phone, tablet, laptop, or any other device that might distract you. When you’re in a conversation or meeting, your focus should be on the person in front of you, not your inbox or social media.

  1. Make eye contact

Making eye contact is a powerful way to show someone that you’re fully present in the conversation. It shows that you’re engaged, interested, and invested in what they’re saying.

  1. Avoid interrupting

Interrupting someone during a conversation or meeting can be seen as rude or disrespectful. Instead, wait for them to finish their thought before jumping in with your own opinion or ideas.

  1. Ask clarifying questions

If you’re not sure about something the speaker said, ask clarifying questions to get a better understanding. This shows that you’re actively listening and invested in the conversation.

  1. Paraphrase what you heard

Paraphrasing what the speaker said is a great way to show that you understand and are engaged in the conversation. It also helps you to remember what was said and to clarify any misunderstandings. Sometimes I like to prompt… “So said another way….”

In conclusion, practicing active listening is a powerful way to improve your communication skills and build stronger relationships. By putting down your devices, making eye contact, avoiding interrupting, asking clarifying questions, and paraphrasing what you heard, you can become an active listening superstar. So, the next time you’re in a conversation or meeting, put these tips into practice and watch your communication skills soar!
